Uganda Government Website Standards Launched
The Government of Uganda through the ICT ministry launched the Uganda Government Website Standards at Grand Imperial Hotel on the May 06, 2008.
The function was presided over by the Minister of State for Information & Communication Technology, Hon John Alintuma Nsambu.
Praxis Africa was the company that was assigned the task of coming up with these standards which will be a basis for all government websites to follow.
Private sector has excelled so much when it comes to delivery of information through websites and it turned out that Government was slow on this, thus those standards.
The workshop among others highlighted design issues, emphasized on piracy and copyright aspects. The consultant from Praxis Africa added that the domain name for government portal will reside at www.uganda.ug and all government websites will be required to adopt the .gov.ug domain extension.
Most websites are being hosted outside Uganda something that this workshop did not advocate for but at the same time it was also noted that the local capacity is not well developed to accommodate the demand.
The ICT Ministry was tasked to avail the list of approved web site developers so that many do not fall victims to fake developers and the response was: That is still an area where a lot of consultations have to be made most especially from the users
